Rail Service Summary
The Port of Charleston features competitive rail service from both Norfolk Southern and CSX. This gives Charleston excellent intermodal connections
to major markets. CSX and Norfolk Southern both offer daily container express and double-stack container services that provide customers fast and economical
service to key cities in the South, Mid-West, Upper Mid-West, and Mid-Atlantic. Important connections to points beyond are available from both carriers.
Both rail lines operate dedicated intermodal yards in Charleston and both lines have exceptional high and wide clearances into the port. Dockside
rail service is available at Columbus Street Terminal, Union Pier Terminal, and North Charleston Terminal.
For breakbulk cargo and transload customers, the Port of Charleston offers excellent rail access to docks and warehouses. Union Pier and Columbus
Street Terminals both have extensive covered rail access to large warehouses.
Both terminals also feature easy transitioning of heavy equipment from
rail to the storage apron. The rail line at Columbus Street Terminal runs
parallel to the dock allowing for easy direct rail car-to-ship transfer.
