Inland Connectivity
The Port of Charleston’s immediate hinterland is rich in consumers, industry, and natural resources…all drivers of trade. Nearly 60 million people live within 500 miles of the Port of Charleston. This Southeastern market is the fastest growing in the U.S. Population projections estimate that the Southeastern U.S. will grow by 43% in the period between 2000 and 2030. This burgeoning base of consumers is bolstered by a strong market base of industry and natural resources. Charleston’s market is particularly strong in the automotive sector, and in the chemical, forest product, furniture, and textile commodities.
Of particular note is the recent influx of consumer goods distribution center facilities in South Carolina. Approximately 20 million square feet of industrial distribution space is in development within 30 miles of the port.
Strategically located in the heart of this market, the Port of Charleston offers excellent highway and rail access to the Southeastern U.S. as well as the Mid-West and even Western states via reverse land-bridge rail services. Charleston is served by both CSX and Norfolk Southern class one rail carriers offering intermodal, boxcar, and hopper services. Interstate Highway 26 is the primary highway artery serving the port. I-26 connects directly to I-95, I-20, I-77, and I-85.
